Linocut & Watercolor: Pasadena Bridge

This is a Linoleum block titled "Pasadena Bridge" in process... I'm carving out shapes and patterns of white space in a subtractive process; areas gouged out from the block won't hold ink when I roll over the surface with a brayer. I sketched the image using a sharpie pen directly on the linoleum, and addded watercolor to remind myself to vary the mark-making at different boundaries to represent distant foliage and trees in the landscape. The style is sort of retro-pop, which lends itself well to the graphic look of relief printing.

Here is a test print, using black relief ink (Daniel Smith) on Somerset Printmaking paper.

The finished print, with watercolor added (Winsor Newton). "Pasadena Bridge" is printed in a limited edition of 30, and this is print #14. It's listed for sale this week on Ebay. Take a look here. (sold)

This is a gorgeous print! It's amazing that you actually carved this, with all its detail. I also wanted to say how creative and clever your "Folk Dog" piece is (eBay (item 230017446746). Both of these strongly reflect your sense of design and ability to work in detail without sacrificing the big picture.

I always did love that bridge (said the former Pasadena denizen). Nice!

I gotta say, though, the product placement on this blog is getting a little out of hand. ;^)

I love the print, although I actually like the unpainted version better - I am a black & white purist myself.

I do have a request for mercy for us older eyes viewing your blog - the olive green you use for text, while tasteful, is VERY hard to read! If you could change it to a brighter color I am sure I am not the only one who would appreciate it...

you've totally inspired me lately, and i've been trying my hands at linocutting. i had some old ones lying around that i only printed once or twice - but i've dug them out of the back of the studio with newfound passion. not sure what will come of them yet. anyway i love your work.

I really like this one! The landscape has a van Gogh-feel over it. It looks very nice both black-and white and with colors added!

Belinda these are great!
I love woodcuts. They are a lost fine art.
I just started looking at you blog and had to stop to comment. I hope I find more of these in your postings.
By the way, Thank you so much for your kind words on my blog today.

Very nice print! I almost prefer the stark black and white image, as you've handled the different textures of the foliage so well. That bridge is so iconic. My mom lives nearby, and I've taken many walks along the arroyo.
