Working on finishing this still life of ranunculus today. I love this flower, and it's best to sink the tubers in the soil in Fall, so now's the time to plant some more of them.
There's something about light passing through water in a glass that always stops me in my tracks. And then there's light passing through ruffled layers of flower petals... how could I not paint this?
Painting the submerged tangle of bright & dark limbs does the opposite of quenching my curiosity about light, and I find the process of drilling down on my attention - to really *focus* on the magic happening right there on my kitchen tiles - to be more than meditative.
I think about it all day, and each time I come back to work on the painting, I wonder what else I might be missing in this magical little scene? How can I teach myself to really see, and then, when I discover each new little gift in this view, how do I use my brushes to give it the right essence & pageantry that it deserves? Back to the brushes.....

I'm new to reading your blog and I find it fascinating.
Your post such as this one where you show works in progress are inspiring for me. Thank you fro sharing such beautiful work.
You do beautiful work.
Exquisite.
Yowsa! Gorgeous!
Just lovely Belinda, I'll never look at water in glass again without thinking of you.
Belinda - I know of few other artists who make glass look as exquisite as you do! The shadows sing, the flowers sing, the colors sing -- there is a chorus within this small vignette -- and it is absolutely fantastic! When you create notecards from your flower vignettes, please let me know -- I want a few dozen!
B, this is incredibly beautiful, you are so good at glass! The feeling of light and airiness in this painting is wonderful.
Hi Belinda, You are sure talented in many mediums, your blog has great variety. JLC
bel, i love this one! the WIP is great, nobody does sunlight on glass and water the way you do!
Lovely Belinda - I also love ranunculas and never thought of cutting them this short but they look great.
Belinda it's so beautiful!!!
Belinda, your love for light always shows up in your paintings, and this one is no exception! (Of course, that's probably why you paint it better than most anyone I know ... because you love it.)
:-) And Lin is right -- if you ever get into the card business...
Your work is so inspiring, and your willingness to share in your process with "work in progress" photos is so generous. Thank you.
B you are so inspiring. I love coming here and taking a peek. I save it for the days that I really need a kick. Thank you for taking the time and updating often so we can all enjoy what you do!
