I've painted and sketched this little bird about a dozen times, and I still struggle with the expression he wears. This one was printed from a 4 x 6 zinc plate, using Daniel Smith black etching ink, on Arches 88 paper. I had fun scraping his teeny feathers into the ink. You can probably see some of that by clicking the image above for a larger view.
After laying in some colored pencil, I put him in a black frame, and took him up to the Boddy House Gallery at Descanso Gardens. It seems fitting to have a bird in the show, since their audible presence along the 160 acres of oaks and camellias is mother nature's sweetest orchestra.

Geez, that eye looks real. I often learn technique by carefully studying your paintings, BDP. In this one, it's the pink-violet and blue touches on his beak (and that spooky realistic eye).
nice,nice,NICE !
Very interesting - you don't often see coloured pencils used in this way. Nice!
belinda, this is so amazing! i cannot believe the detail you get into your work... and yes, the eye is truly amazing!!!
Yes! I noticed him today up at the Boddy House. The colors are amazing -- especially the eye. And the feathers! Nice chatting. 8-]
