I watched Plein Air artist Paula Bacinski paint a cactus bud large scale in the courtyard of the San Juan Capistrano Mission during a California Art Club event. She moved easily between chatty conversation with on-lookers, and deep concentration in the "zone" while painting. I realized while watching that it was akin to any other flexibility; mastery of that segue just requires practice and consistency. The first time I tried it, I was pretty pathetic; I think I ruined a couple of small watercolors. But I'd have to say that the practice paid off, and I'm pretty cozy with chatting & painting - back and forth - during a weekend long art festival now. There's nothing like watching an artist you admire to get you fired up to move past your comfort zone.
