My Aunt Barbara left a small, rural, New England village to live in a Madrid Naval base with her new husband in the late 1950's. A small black and white photo from that time was my reference for this piece.
This print started with a dark-field (Daniel Smith oil based black etching ink) monotype, with a la poupee' color added to the background.
Laying in the first under-painting of watercolor washes.
Making adjustments to the features and facial structure with colored pencils.
Cross-hatching colored pencils for skin tone.

Wow, you're incredibly talented. This is gorgeous.
And I love Nap in the Park.
Wow the finished project is so bright!
I have a question for you. I recently tried adding gouache to a blockprint and the artist tape totally ruined the paper when I pulled it off no matter how careful I was.
I used Arches 88.
How do you get your crisp edges?
You have been tagged for the oddities meme... good luck

Thanks mls. The crisp edges on this one were printed from the plate - the initial color around the background was dabbed in with rolled stems of felt (a la poupee) and fingertips. After the ink was dry, I added watercolor with a flat brush - no tape. I don't think you can get crisp edges with water-based paint on Arches88; too much bleed into the fiber. There's no sizing in it. This is BFK Rives.
