Monotype: Snap Apple

Snap Apple, 3 x 6 Monotype
Sold

After coating my zinc plate with black ink, I lifted the image of a girl playing a game of Snap Apple out of the pigment, by wiping the ink away with rolled paper towels and blending sticks.

Using fingertips to tap colored pigment into the areas I cleared of black ink.

Pulling the print, after a trip through the press.

Reduction Woodcut & Watercolor

Avocado Pit Still Life 5 x 7 Woodcut & Watercolor

When I was a college student, I kept mementos on my desk, and sketched them like abstract journal entries. A thrift store lamp with a brass c-clef on the base was my reading light - my paternal grandparents were musicians. The rose colored glasses - a favorite item (and phrase) from my step mother's leftover 70's wardrobe, hung on the lamp. An African violet from a cutting my maternal grandmother gave me, sprouted purple flowers all winter. I found the sea shell on the beach in Santa Barbara, and used it to prop a photo of me with my siblings taken the same day. The mini cassette deck was used to record and listen to notes my step dad and I exchanged cross country. And I kept an avocado pit, sprouting in a glass - to see if a plant I associated with a chapter in my life in California, would grow in my home turf of snowy New England.

Watercolor & Colored Pencil: Frog Hunting

My brothers used to climb into Grandpa's hip-waders and hunting shirts, and don his fly-fishing hats to hike down to the pond to catch frogs. Our family photo albums are dotted with poses by the pool; smiling boys, draped with frogs on heads, shoulders and hands. At dinner time, the boys came inside, and the newly named buddies hopped back down the hill towards the pond.

Watercolor: Shoes on the Sill

My paternal grandparents had a beautiful collection of miniature porcelain, metal and wood shoes on their fireplace mantle. I was fascinated by them as a child, because they were pretty, but I had no idea where they came from.

Later, I learned that when my grandparents were newlyweds in 1928, my grandfather borrowed money from his new father in law to open a shoe store. Over the years, the whole family worked in the store on and off, where my grandmother was the ultimate jolly, warm italian sales lady. Family members gave her the tiny shoes as gifts, one by one, until she had a collection of them. By the time I was a teenager, the store was gone, and everyone had moved to different states. I didn't understand the significance of the shoes until both of my grandparents were gone.

I'm lucky to have a few of my grandmother's little shoes in my home. They remind me of early beginnings, and home-grown businesses and family history.

Another restaurant in town, settled in a perfect spot for late afternoon sun painting scenes. They've changed their umbrellas to a light tan canvas now - the same color as most of the earth and stucco and block walls here in the high desert. I miss the red.

Watercolor: Patio Dining

There's a restaurant I frequent here in town that makes a mean salad. Most evenings, when the sun is low, their entrance is a study in shadow shapes and light. It's just one more reason to frequent the place.

Watercolor: Good Morning Sunshine

I sold my dining room set this weekend. We need more seating for our expanding dinners. The table has been a steadfast model for me, especially as the sun comes up, and drapes the surface in bright light. I can't resist the scene. Luckily, I have pages of reference photos and sketches still to be painted.
