Watercolor: Bunk Bed

Bunk Bed 5 x 7 Watercolor on Ampersand Board
Process shots begin at the bottom of this post
Sold
I'm experimenting with different supports, and this one was great fun. Ampersand makes a gesso board in an assortment of standard sizes, and you can use any medium on the surface. This one had a very slight tooth to it, and I have two more to paint on, so I might get a few new acrylic brushes - a bright and a flat - to play with scumbling the pigments. More tomorrow...
Early glazing of color temperature and values in the shaded areas of the figure...
Laying in the first washes of color - blocking in shapes....

Watercolor: Bulkhead

Bulkhead 4.25 x 10.5 Watercolor
Just back from San Diego.... I started this one at the ArtWalk in Little Italy and finished it this morning. Great show, great time with friends and fellow artists. Big thanks to several patrons I've only known through online communications - what a great surprise to meet during the art festival!

Reference photo on the left, and the first glazes of watercolor layered onto hot pressed paper.

Glue Collograph: Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk 6 x 6 Glue Collograph with watercolor & colored pencil
Sold
Process pics start near the bottom.
This is my third glue collograph, printed in Victor McCay's studio. Previous posts outlined the process on the first two I made here and here.

Pulling the print after a trip through Victor's press.

The inked plate, with a darker color applied to the raised glue areas.

Elmer's glue on scrap matboard, sealed with gloss medium & varnish. Light watercolor was applied before sealing so I could see the glue after it dried clear. It gave me more of a map the first time I went over it with an inked brayer.

San Diego Art Walk next weekend!

A week from today, I'll be hanging art for a wonderful festival in Little Italy, San Diego. The ArtWalk is one of my favorite festivals all year; the area is beautiful (I can see the ocean from my booth on Beech Street), the meatball vendors and fresh fruit stands are close by, and there's a ton of wonderful art at the show. Friends from other states meet us there - so it's part art exhibit & part weekend getaway. If you're local to the area, stop by and say hello. http://artwalksandiego.org

Taking over the entire house as I prepare for the show: matting and framing a whole lot of art.

On the art table, with watercolors and colored pencils, playing with color and texture on top of the black ink.
The plate, ready for a trip through the press, with a variety of mark-making scraped into the remaining ink.
Daniel Smith oil-based black etching ink rolled out on beveled plexiglass with a brayer. The image is being pulled out of the ink in a subtractive process. This is the same plate I used for First Day of Spring a few weeks ago.

Soft Ground Etching: Pilous

Pilous 1.75 x 4.75 Soft Ground Etching with watercolor
Sold
This little etching was inspired by vintage Edwardian stage actress portrait cards. You can see the zinc plate I used to make the etching below for a sense of scale. The title "Pilous", means covered with soft, downy hair.

Dry Point Engraving: Bird on her Shoulder

Bird on her Shoulder 5x7 Dry Point with Watercolor and Colored Pencil [2nd A/P]
Sold

The plate for this print is still a work in process. Dry Point on plexiglass with a whistler's needle is a slow, meditative process for me. I pulled a few test proofs and painted this one over the weekend. There's a whole lot more cross hatching to do before the plate is ready for printing an edition, but it was good to be painting & testing values on the proof print in the meantime.

Woodcut: Sunset Sail

Sunset Sail, 3.25 x 5 woodcut with watercolor
My step dad, on his Cape Dory Sail Boat. Twenty years ago, we sailed the Inter-coastal Waterways around Virginia, and I took this photo of him. I love the imagery and the memories, so it'll be a reference for a painting this year too.

Watercolor: Juggling

Juggling 15 x 22 Watercolor
The little 4.5 x 7 study for this is here, and the geometry and pattern of the composition was fun to paint bigger. This larger version will be in San Diego at the ArtWalk on April 26 & 27th. I'm on Beech Street in booth #123. Come and say hello.
