Monotype & Watercolor: Bowl of Berries

Bowl of Berries 6.5 x 4.5 Monotype with Watercolor (sold)
I watched an incredibly informative and inspiring DVD on printmaking with Catherine Kernan, using Akua inks to make her large-scale, organically complex and stunning woodblocks and monoprints.  It's called Between Ink and Paper, and it's produced and published by Rostow and Jung over at Akua inks.  (The good folks over at Akua sent me the DVD for placing in the finals of a printmaking contest they hosted earlier this year... Thanks Akua!)

After 85 minutes of demos, filmed in Catherine's Massachusetts studio, I could hardly wait to try some of her methods in my printmaking. She's articulate, methodical and inventive, and her expert handling of her inks, tools, press and plates was - to me - awe-inspiring. If you've considered working large scale, or you're interesting in using waterbased inks, or you'd like to re-use previous printmaking plates, together, and in new ways, this DVD might be just the thing.

Here's a little teaser I found on YouTube for Catherine's demos. There are a few more posted if you click on the publisher link, and each one is about a minute long.

Art Quote
René Magritte said:
"I despise my own past and that of others. I despise resignation, patience, professional heroism, and all obligatory sentiments. I also despise decorative arts, folklore, advertising, radio announcers' voices, aerodynamics, the Boy Scouts, the smell of naphtha, the news and drunks.
I like subversive humor, freckles, women's knees and long hair, the laughter of playing children, and a girl running down the street.
I hope for vibrant love, the impossible, the chimerical.
I dread knowing precisely my own limitations."

Your work is beautiful, and always engaging. It's warm, and human. Your energy and the gift of sharing are truly awe inspiring. I doubt you realize the gift you provide the online art community.

@Sonja, thanks for your visit, and your compliments. The mixed media pieces are great fun, and the results are far away from what I make with watercolor, or printmaking, so it's like entering a whole new world. :)

@LS, Wow, that's a lot of compliment. I don't know if it's true, but I'm really glad you feel that way, and I'm grateful for your taking the time to say so. I get a lot of gifts from the art community every day, and sharing what we do and what we've learned makes the online collective of artists inspired and fired up ~ all at the same time. Like an art party. :)
